Counting the days…(Kinanda Fest Recommends)

So!!We’re counting the days till the next Kinanda. We’ve missed you a whole lot. The 7th edition was an absolute blast: the music, poetry, you fabulous lot and of course the infamous #HemediSwag… Check out the pics in the last post.

While we’re counting the days to Kinanda Fest 8, here are a few musical gems to keep the longing away(or enhance it all the more… :-D ).

We’re traveling across the continent with this post. First up is the very talented Ngwatilo Mawiyoo, who has graced the Kinanda stage (or is it grass?).Introducing: July, the first single from her new album- ‘Introducing Ngwatilo‘. The lyrics are from her book ‘Blue Mothertongue‘. Talk to her on twitter @Ngwatilo if you want to find out more.

From Nigeria, Nneka is back with her second album. The first single off it is the title of the album “Soul Is Heavy“, a powerful, poignant song which remembers the late activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. It is a heavy song, the truth of which she sings will tug at your heart no doubt.

Next up is Y’akoto, who I discovered on my twitter stream. I love the crowd I follow; so brilliant and ecletic. She has a beautiful haunting voice with traces of Sade.  I haven’t been able to find out much about her so if you do please let us know in the comments.

Next up is another African Queen, just noticed all the artistes featured are women. Got to do one for the fellas (coming up soon) Her name is Fatoumata Diawarawho is Cote d’Ivoire born and Mali raised.  The video is interesting, you can so appreciate the culture that is uniquely African. Language not withstanding, that is some beautiful music. So you better watch out for the next post on  gentlemen from across the continent.

Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival,
Discover Something New.

Hiyo Ndio Swagga…. #HemediSwag!!!

Sometimes words do injustice to…well….things like this. The umbrella has never gotten this much love(not since Rihanna’s  so-titled hit single.)

Introducing the ‘swaggists’: (click their photos  to catch up with them on twitter…say a special prayer for them while at it will you?)

1.AnnieSoul-budding artist:

2. Nanjira- instigator of this debacle.

3. Alice- holder of a degree in Civil Engineering.

4. Njeri-fierce!!

5. Ng’endo- has a serious day job.

6. Noni- also has a serious day job (or so she’d have us think)

7. Fena- Swagxy.(swagger+sexy=swagxy she says)

Kinanda Fest 7

Kinanda Fest 7 goes down this Sunday, July 31st, 2011.  This is what we have lined up for you:

Music byKatoAnnieSoulDempsey ,Aziza Muzik ,Maia Von Lekow

Poetry by:  Kiptum and Dennis Inkwa (Mstari Wa Nne), Kadryn,

Photo Gallery by: Mwangi ‘Mwarv’ Kirubi

The July edition of Kinanda Festival is particularly interesting as it is involves our giving back drive. Our beloved nation is plagued with a drought that’s left many fellow countrymen in a dire state. We have to do our best to help our starving brothers and sisters, and as such we have come up with cool ways to do this!

We will have Ahmed Salim, a bona fide Kenyan hero, who single-handedly started a social media campaign(#feedKE) that has mobilized Kenyans in raising well over Ksh. 335,000 in 1 week, speaking to us about what drove him to take this bold step.

To find out more about #feedKE and how to get involved, click here:

We will be supporting Ahmed’s initiative using Foursquare check-ins. We will be attempting to unlock Foursquare’s  Super Swarm badge. More on how this works here.

For every check-in at Kifaru Gardens, Urban Bites will donate Kshs. 15 to The Kenya Red Cross through #feedKE.

The UrbanBites QR code treasure hunt is back this time with more exciting clues and with very enticing hampers to be won.

We will have random photo shoots with some of our ‘veteran’ photographers so you don’t wanna miss.

It’s gonna be an afternoon of great music, poetry, photography, fun; all this while supporting a noble cause.

So to recap:
